Continuous casting billets

O.R.I. Martin spa produces continuous casting steel billets to be sold directly to the market of re-rollers and hot printers. The refining process with the degassing station and the protected jet casting of the entire production guarantee the supply of billets in special high-quality steel.

Raw materials

The raw materials consist of scraps of iron, cast iron and other casting parts which are selected and loaded onto the furnace conveyor.

EAF - Electric arc furnace

Consteel® furnace with continuous charging of scrap, liquid pool and pre-heating thanks to the suction fumes. The steel melts at around 1,650° C, thanks to the heat released by the electric arc, sparked between the graphite electrodes and the underlying scrap and aided by the chemical energy of the insufflated oxygen.

LADLE TAPPING

Once fusion is completed, the temperature is reached and the desired chemical analysis is finalised, the furnace is tilted and the liquid steel is tapped into the ladle which carries 80-85 tons, through a hole which is fitted with a closing system (EBT).

SLAGGING MACHINE

The slagging machine, operated with an appropriate mechanical boom, is used to eliminate any residual furnace slag from the ladle and create a synthetic one, appropriate for refining steel.

Secondary metallurgy (LF)

The two secondary metallurgy stations (Ladle Furnace), equipped with electrodes for heating, ladle sections for argon (used for stirring the pool) and ferroalloy addition system, allow for achieving the requested chemical analysis.

Degassing

The ladle is closed inside a hermetic container which is subjected to a vacuum by means of a pump system. This allows the gases dissolved in the liquid steel to escape and helps the micro-inclusions to float.

Continuous casting

The ladle is then loaded onto the casting tower. The steel exits the ladle tray and passes through a snorkel which prevents it from coming into contact with air. The steel fills the tundish and – through 5 exit holes, with an equal number of snorkels – pours into the copper moulds with 140x140mm and 160x160mm cross-sectional dimensions. Here, water cools the steel billet and external solidification takes place. As the billet solidifies it is gradually extracted. Two electromagnetic stirrers mix the product, preventing segregation and the formation of heart-shaped dendrites.

Cooling plate

The cooling bed guarantees a homogeneous structure. A blade system cuts the bars at the required length.

Conditioning

The operator uses a semi-automatic grinding wheel to remove the corners or the entire surface of the billet.

Billet inspection

After undergoing grinding, the billets are inspected by the Quality Manager who then authorises their storage in the warehouse.

Billet storage

The billets are then stored away grouped according to the type of steel, ready for the subsequent rolling phase.
