Hot rolled wire rod

O.R.I. Martin produces wire rods and bars in coil made of quality steel in a range of diameters between 5.5 and 42 mm. Rolling takes place at a controlled temperature using the very latest technology. This allows a smaller grain size to be obtained together with a more fine and even structure. Optimal characteristics for subsequent use in drawing and cold moulding in addition to a higher degree of globularisation after the annealing process.

Billet warehouse

The billets, with 140x140mm and 160x160mm cross-sectional dimensions and 12 m length, are picked from the warehouse depending on the open orders and prepared for being loaded into the furnace.

Heating furnace

Rolling takes place with carbide rollers at very high speeds at controlled temperatures.

Roughing

Roughing is the first operation in the rolling process; it occurs at low speed through a series of stands containing cast iron rollers that effect an initial reduction of the billet's cross-sectional dimensions.

Surface checks

A system comprising 4 digital video cameras allows for identifying any type of surface defect, which is then recorded and analysed. As a result, any defective rolled element can be scrapped with extreme precision.

Rolling

Rolling takes place with carbide rollers at very high speeds at controlled temperatures.

Calibration

The rolling is finished using vertical and horizontal cages which guarantee limited tolerances.

On line checks

The rolling is inspected at 360 degrees of the surface, through cameras that process the image in 3D.

Garret

The rolling is then accompanied into a cylindrical container (garret), which rotates and creates the coils and collects them in the shape of a roll.

Cooling tunnel

The roll extracted from the garret proceeds in a tunnel for homogeneous cooling and for the required mechanical characteristics to be achieved.

COIL-SHAPED HEAD

The wire then enters a coil-shaped tube that rotates and acquires the shape of overlapped coils.

STELMOR BED

The coils are placed on a sliding bed (stelmor), fitted with fans and hoods for controlled cooling and the required mechanical characteristics to be achieved.

Inspection

With the final inspection all the material produced is checked and the head and tail of the coil are cropped.

Strip warehouse

The strip is tied with 4 straps per coil, then the two coils are subsequently tied in a pack and stored in the warehouse.
