    Environmental investments

Ori Martin care as much for the external environment as for the internal one, and have always considered this as an important part of the company's mission. For this reason we are following an internal policy for the reduction of any external environmental impact. This policy has been followed in the last 10 years with investments linked with the protection of the environment of about 15% of the total investments.

      The environmental culture

The respect of the external environment is also as the result of investments in the understanding of basic rules. For this reason we invest in specialized training classes undertaken by our employees on an issue more and more relevant to our world:  the environment.

    Environmental certification

Our ongoing internal policy of continuous care and correct managing of environmental issues, enabled us to achieve in 2002 the first ISO 14001 certification in Italy in the electro -steel producer sector.

    Atmospheric emissions

Our environmental mission began in the early ’70's when we made our first investment on an arm-filter for the aspiration and collecting of EAF dust, which substituted the old water-based system. In the years ’85-’86 with the installation of the ‘dog-house’ (sic) (a type of box for the insulation of the EAF) and an aspiration system, dust collection was fully operational and effective.

The majority of the investment was made during the years ’92-’94 when the new filter plant was installed in addition to the ‘elephant-house’ (sic) (a box that encloses all of the EAF area). For this project half of the investment of that triennium was spent. With following additional implementations we obtained an increase in the efficiency of the filter plant, particularly after the installation of the continuous scrap charge (Consteel) that reduces secondary emissions.

Following a long period environmental policy, in the next two years 2009-10 we are revamping the filter system, to reduce its energetic consumption and its acoustic impact.

Water - something to be respected

The Company placed a major effort on better use of water and have made big investments to increase the efficiency of the new water filter plant (substituting the old one dated early ’70) on both the melting plant and rolling plant.

Thanks to the great attention put on the efficiency of the water filter plant and a strong policy for a better use of water we obtained great reduction on water need per tons produces.

    The energetic expenditure reduction

The energetic expenditure reduction is not just an economic issue but become also an ethical mission. For this reason Ori Martin have been investing for years in the optimisation of the internal production cycle to increase efficiency. This have been obtained thanks to investments on technology and in the new generation EAF-Consteel with continuous charge that allowed a great reduction in the energetic need for the melting process that since 1990 have been reduced by 18%

   Heat Saving

The energy saving has been achieved also as a result of the re-use of the hot emissions of the rolling furnace. Thanks to an internal heating system, the hot emissions reheat all of the internal buildings such as the offices, cloak rooms and production areas. The heat achieved from this re-use means the avoidance of burning thousands of m3 of natural gases.

    Reduction of acoustic impact

Because of the localization of the working plant next to the town centre, great care has always been taken re the acoustic impact on the neighbourhood. During the mid ‘80s the first investments began with the construction of the first ‘dog-house’ - a sound-insulation mobile system that, as a shell, covered the EAF and was opened only for the charging operation. During the early ‘90s the system was expanded with the creation of the ‘elephant-house’ that enclosed all the EAF area. In ’98 with the Consteel, thanks to the protected-arc-melting system under slag we strongly reduced the acoustic emissions compared with a traditional EAF.

Residual materials: a resource for the future

During the steel production cycle, there are various types of residual materials that, if correctly treated, and the optimal application can be found, can then have a second life, going back into a new production cycle. This is the target of an ambitious environmental policy called ‘’No Waste Policy’’. The big part of the residual materials are already used in other production cycles, as the surface steel scale that is used in cement production, the EAF dust is used in the metallurgical industry for the extraction of tin, the EAF slag is used by the building construction industry.
